Record and nurture the rich cultural heritage that surrounds these ponies
Native ponies have long been valued for their role in the history and traditions of the areas in which they have been bred.
For thousands of years, Welsh ponies have grazed and graced the landscape and been instrumental in molding its shape. Once used to transport coal from the pits, providing the backbone for the Welsh industry for over a century, they now attract visitors from all over the world. They teach children to ride and continue to inspire adults around the globe as show ponies. Yet, their worth has still not been truly appreciated and that appreciation may come too late after their irretrievable loss unless we are careful.
“Without the people of Eriskay there would be no pony, but without the pony there would have been no people on Eriskay.”
Father Calum MacLellan (1926-2012)
